Central UNIX Account Migration

Migration

Information Technology Services (ITS) will replace the Central UNIX computer that hosts web pages and files held in Central UNIX accounts during the weekend of October 13-15, 2006. This includes web sites like:

  • http://www.calpoly.edu/~username - individual user accounts
  • http://www.calpoly.edu/~deptname - department accounts
  • http://www.calpoly.edu/~clubname - ASI clubs and Instructional Related Activities accounts
  • http://www.deptname.calpoly.edu - department accounts using a virtual host name with files hosted on Central UNIX, e.g.http://www.arch.calpoly.edu/
All current Central UNIX account information and files will be moved to the new computer for account holders.

IMPORTANT changes for Central UNIX account holders after the replacement takes place:

  • User logins will be authenticated using the standard Cal Poly username and password (the same one you use to access the My Cal Poly Portal).
  • Uploading your files will require using a secure connection. This will require changes in your software settings if you use a publishing program (like Dreamweaver or FrontPage) or ftp software. See http://www.calpoly.edu/~www/uploading.html for more information.
  • Compute services (compilers such as C++, etc.) will be supported at a College or Department level but will no longer be available on Central UNIX.
  • Quotas will be increased to 50Mb per account.
  • Upon creation of new accounts, permission settings to a user's public html directory will be set to automatically allow viewing by anyone accessing your web site. There will no longer be a need to run the "Websetup" program.

Individual User Accounts - After Migration

If you do not use your Central UNIX account (either by logging on to polylog1.calpoly.edu or posting a web page accessed using http://www.calpoly.edu/~youraccountname) the only thing you need to know is:
  • This service is available if you want to use it. For more information see: http://warc.calpoly.edu/gettingstarted/index.html
  • You will use your Cal Poly username and password (the same one you use to access the My Cal Poly Portal) to log onto your Central UNIX account.
If you use your Central UNIX account and it matches your Cal Poly username and password, you will only need to change your software ftp settings to a secure connection if you use a publishing program (like Dreamweaver or FrontPage) or ftp software. See http://www.calpoly.edu/~www/uploading.html for instructions on changing your ftp settings.

If you use your Central UNIX account and it does not match your Cal Poly username and password you need to know the following:
  • You will need to use your Cal Poly username and password (the same one you use to access the My Cal Poly Portal) to login or upload files on polylog1 (the Central UNIX environment). Your existing files will be moved to the new account for you.
  • The new URL used to access your web site will include your Cal Poly username. For instance, if your Central UNIX username is jdoe but your Cal Poly username is jzdoe, your website URL will change from: http://www.calpoly.edu/~jdoe to http://www.calpoly.edu/~jzdoe
  • You will need to notify your web site visitors about the change to your new URL.
Hints to find out who may have links to your web site: Search for your old URL using the CP Google search and internet Google tool. To use the CP Google search go to http://warc.calpoly.edu/maintenance/linkmaintenance.html and follow the instructions in Step 3.
  • Uploading your files will require using a secure connection. This will require changes in your software settings if you use a publishing program (like Dreamweaver or FrontPage) or ftp software. See http://www.calpoly.edu/~www/uploading.html for instructions on changing your ftp settings.

Department Accounts

After the migration, department Central UNIX account holders will log into their accounts using their My Cal Poly username and password (the same one you use to access the My Cal Poly Portal). The department URL will not change.

Uploading your files will require using a secure connection. This will require changes in your software settings if you use a publishing program (like Dreamweaver or FrontPage) or ftp software. See http://www.calpoly.edu/~www/uploading.html for instructions on changing your ftp settings.

For more information, read the email sent to department account owners.

ASI Clubs and Instructional Related Activities (IRA) Accounts

After the migration, ASI and Instructional Central UNIX account holders will log into their accounts using their My Cal Poly username and password (the same one you use to access the My Cal Poly Portal). The club and IRA URL will not change.

Uploading your files will require using a secure connection. This will require changes in your software settings if you use a publishing program (like Dreamweaver or FrontPage) or ftp software. See http://www.calpoly.edu/~www/uploading.html for instructions on changing your ftp settings.

Department Accounts Using a Virtual Host Name

This migration does not affect the configuration of the virtual host name for department or club names. For more information refer to the information above on department and club account changes.
