Subject: Important Changes to Department Central UNIX Accounts after October 15, 2006

Information Technology Services (ITS) is replacing the Central UNIX computer that hosts departmental web pages and the files held in department Central UNIX accounts on the weekend of October 14th and 15th, 2006.

All files will be moved to the new computer for you. However, there are several changes that will affect department accounts and the way departments manage their web sites.

Read further for important information about

  • changes in username/passwords

  • web addresses associated with your Central UNIX account

  • changes in procedures for uploading files to your Central UNIX account

  • mail aliases

For details about the migration refer to the Central UNIX Account Migration page.

For questions or concerns about your departmental Cal Poly Username and password or to update your Department Librarian information, contact the ITS Service Desk at (805) 756-7000 or email them at servicedesk@calpoly.edu

Username/Password

After the migration, your Central UNIX account name will be the department account name listed on the table below. Your Central UNIX login will be your short Cal Poly Username which is your Cal Poly Username without @calpoly.edu

Password changes

It is important that you coordinate any password changes with all users of your departmental Cal Poly Username. Webmasters, email account managers, and email alias managers will all be affected by changes to the Cal Poly Password for your department account. To update or change the password, visit the Password Help website for more information.

If you know your department Cal Poly Username (from the list below) and Cal Poly Password and can log into the My Cal Poly Portal, you will be able to log into the new Central UNIX account.

If you don't know your department Cal Poly Username or Cal Poly Password, the account owner can request a password reset by submitting the password change form to the ITS Service Desk. If you are not able to log into the My Cal Poly Portal with your department password, we recommend that you request a reset before the move to the new computer (October 15, 2006).

Web Addresses

There will be no changes in how people access your department's web site.

If your Central UNIX account name has changed to match the Cal Poly Username, ITS has mapped your old URL to your new account name. For instance, the old UNIX account name was: dept123. After the move to the new computer it is: department123. Both the URLs http://www.calpoly.edu/~dept123 AND http://www.calpoly.edu/~department123 will work.

Some departments request a custom web address, also known as a virtual host name. This provides a translation between a web address from http://www.calpoly.edu/~deptname to http://www.departmentselectedname.calpoly.edu. Any changes in mapping your existing virtual host name to your new account name will occur automatically as part of the move to the new computer.

If you do not have a custom web address name (virtual host name) assigned to your department's web site hosted on Central UNIX and would like one, see the Custom Web Addresses site for more information.

Changes in Uploading files to Central UNIX

For security reasons, the method used to upload files is changing from ftp to secure ftp (sftp). This is what your web authoring software (like Dreamweaver or Front Page) uses to upload your files. See http://www.calpoly.edu/~www/uploading.html for instructions to change your ftp settings after the migration.

Mail Aliases

Department accounts on Central UNIX can support mailing lists also known as mail aliases. The move to the new computer will not affect your department mail aliases. If you do not use mail aliases and would like more information see: Department Alias Instructions [pdf].
