International Cell Phone Procedures

International rate plans must be added to cellular devices (global capable feature phones and smartphones) before leaving the United States.  Employees with State cell phones that require their phones while traveling should contact their department Telephone Coordinators and review the information provided for our two government account carriers.

AT&T WIRELESS

For those traveling internationally and require a cell phone, Telephone Coordinators should review the AT&T Passport Packages for the country where their employee will be traveling at http://www.att.com/att/global .

OPTIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL CELL PHONE COVERAGE ARE BELOW:

  1. EQUIPMENT UPGRADE OF CURRENT CELL:  If you wish to upgrade current equipment to a global phone, submit a Cellular Services Request Form to confirm upgrade eligibility and order a new iPhone.  Remember that phones will need to be changed to the appropriate international voice, data and messaging plans as shown at the AT&T site referenced above before traveling abroad and then returned to their domestic voice, data and messaging plans.  Note that AT&T requires that global data plans remain in place for a full 30 days.  (Requires 7 day lead time for the ITS Service Desk to process).
  2. RATE PLAN CHANGE:  If travel is outside the United States (including Mexico and Canada), telephone coordinators should submit a Cellular Services Request Form and current cell phone rate plan can be changed for the travel dates plus the full 30 day global data plan period.  (Requires 7 day lead time for the ITS Service Desk to process.)

VERIZON WIRELESS

For those traveling internationally and require a cellular connectivity, Telephone Coordinators should to review the Verizon calling procedures for the country where their user will be traveling at http://www.verizonwireless.com/landingpages/international/.

OPTIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL CELL PHONE COVERAGE ARE BELOW:

  1. GLOBAL RENTAL CELL:  For travel less than 21 days, the telephone coordinator should contact Verizon's Global Travel Program at 800-711-8300 to arrange for a rental phone to be obtained and paid for with their department credit card.  (Process requires 7 days for Verizon to complete the transaction and the user to receive the device.  This rental requires a Cellular Services Request Form to the ITS Service Desk for initial authorization then is handled by the department.)
  2. TEMPORARY USE GLOBAL CELL PURCHASE:  User can purchase an international phone upon arrival in the country, usually available at the airport.  Costs for the cell and all calls may be included on the Travel Expense Claim when the employee returns.  (Transaction does not require a Cellular Services Request Form to the ITS Service Desk as it is handled by the department.)
  3. EQUIPMENT UPGRADE OF CURRENT CELL:  If you wish to upgrade current equipment to a global phone, submit a Cellular Service Request Form to confirm upgrade eligibility and order a new device.  Remember that phones will need to be changed to the international data plan at a prorated $64.99/month cost (which includes voice and messaging discounts) before traveling abroad and then returned to the unlimited data plan at $24.99/month.  (Requires 7 day lead time for the ITS Service Desk to process).
  4. RATE PLAN CHANGE:  If travel is outside the United States (including Mexico and Canada) Telephone Coordinators should submit a Cellular Services Form through the portal so the cell phone rate plan can be changed for the travel period.  The Government Unlimited Smartphone GlobalEmail Plan at $64.99/month will be added but costs will be prorated by Verizon Wireless for only the dates needed plus one day before departure and one day after return to the United States.  (Requires 7 day lead time for the ITS Service Desk to process.)
