What is the My Cal Poly Web Portal?
My Cal Poly is a web portal that features information and services in a format that you can personalize.

Who can use My Cal Poly?
Cal Poly students, faculty, staff and new applicants who know their Cal Poly User Name and Cal Poly Password can use My Cal Poly.
What is my Cal Poly User Name and Cal Poly Password?
Your Cal Poly User Name and Password give you access to centrally supported computing services and the My Cal Poly Portal.

What are the Web browser versions and settings that are required to use My Cal Poly?
My Cal Poly is designed to work with current versions of the Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers. Cal Poly provides technical support for these applications through the ITS Service Desk. Do not use the AOL browser.
Apple no longer supports Internet Explorer browsers on Macintosh workstations and the new My Cal Poly framework does not render correctly on MAC's accessing with IE. Use Firefox or Safari instead.
Note: People using older MAC operating system before OS X, may not be able to use the new browsers, so they can try Netscape, but it must be version 7.0 or newer.To avoid page “rendering” errors on the My Course Info channel, people using Netscape Navigator Version 4.7 or earlier must download the new Netscape 7.x browser or use Firefox.
My Cal Poly does not support “tabbed browsing”, a feature on new browsers that enables people to simultaneously visit and then “tab” to several URL’s at once. When viewing My Course Info Class lists, for instance, you may only view or print one at a time.
Browser cookies and JavaScript must be enabled in order for My Cal Poly to function properly.
These features are on by default in most browser applications. If you have disabled either function please see your browser documentation or contact the ITS Service Desk at 756-7000 for assistance.
An Important Note for All Browsers
For an absolutely secure logout, you must close your browser after logging off of the application.
What is the url for My Cal Poly?
The url is: http://my.calpoly.edu/.
What do I need in order to access My Cal Poly?
You will need to know your Cal Poly User Name, your Cal Poly Password, and have a SSL enabled (secure sockets layer) web browser (i.e., Firefox or Internet Explorer) installed on your computer.
How do I start using the My Cal Poly Portal?
To use the My Cal Poly Portal, go to http://my.calpoly.edu/.
Enter your Cal Poly User Name in the Cal Poly User Name field.
Enter your Cal Poly Password in the Cal Poly Password field.
Click the Login Button.
Does the portal have a session timeout?
As a security precaution, My Cal Poly and the applications that are accessed through My Cal Poly all have “inactivity timeouts.” Timeout intervals are set at the system level are defined by campus, CSU, and/or private industry security standards. If you are timed out of any application or My Cal Poly, you simply need to log back in.
To avoid a timeout, a user must periodically press the enter key or move from page to page within an application or on the web. Searching for, entering, or deleting data on a field on a page without pressing the enter key is not considered activity with regard to session timeouts. Session timeouts are completely independent of one another. The inactivity timeouts for some individual systems are listed below:

What are tabs?
Tabs are similar to folders on your desktop. Each tab is a separate screen on your page and can contain several channels. Tabs are used to organize the various channels in a format that suits your needs. Tabs can be managed by clicking the Customize link. You can create new tabs as well as customize the current tabs.
How do I customize my portal page?
Once you have logged into my.calpoly.edu, click on Customize at the top of this screen.
You will be presented with a screen representing the layout of tabs and channels currently active in your portal.
How do I subscribe to a channel on the portal?
After selecting Customize, you may add a channel to the desired location by clicking the Add Channel button. The Add Channel button is displayed before and after each channel in each column so that you may easily add your new subscription directly to the desired position on your layout. After clicking Add Channel, select the desired channel from the list and click Add Channel.
The portal will bring up another screen to serve as the layout design page. This page allows users to position the channel in the desired location within the portal layout:
To reposition a channel or tab, click on the appropriate arrow icon representing the direction in which the channel or tab will be “nudged”:
- Right/Left arrow button: Moves the channel or column left or right.
- Up arrow button: Moves channels up or down.
- The “X” icon: Deletes the associated channel from the display.
- To create a new column, click on the New Column button.
- To create a new tab, click on the New Tab button.
- To modify the relative width of columns, click on the Select Column button for any column.
- Options to resize the columns will be displayed at the top of the screen.
- To delete a column click on Select Column and then click the Delete this column link at the top of the screen.
- To delete a tab, click on the appropriate tab, then click on the Delete this tab link at the top of the screen.
- Cancel and return link: User may click on this button to cancel any modifications to their layout.
- Once complete, select the “go back” icon to save changes to the portal layout.
- An important note about the “go back” icon and the Cancel button:
- In some screens, you may be provided with both a “go back” icon and a Cancel button.
- The “go back” icon will return you to the standard portal channel view.
- The Cancel button will cancel the current action and return you to the previous screen, which is usually the Customize screen.
How do I collapse, detach, or remove a channel from my layout?
To collapse a channel, select the icon
from the channel title bar. To un-collapse the channel, click on the focus button

Skins
My Cal Poly has only one “skin” or color scheme available. New skins may be available in future My Cal Poly Portal offerings.
How do I reset my layout to be the default?
You may reset your layout to match the current default set of colors, tabs, and channel subscriptions for the entire portal by selecting the Customize link at the top of the screen, then choose “Revert to default layout.”
What are Cal Poly Announcements?
The Announcements Channel is a powerful tool that allows users to receive information from various Cal Poly groups they are affiliated with. This can include campus-wide, departmental, course, or club information. Users can subscribe or unsubscribe to the available Announcement Channels. By default, the Announcements Channel is located on the Main tab of the portal. For more information about how to subscribe to the Announcements Channel, please refer to the How do I subscribe to a channel on the portal FAQ above.
How do I subscribe to additional Announcements threads?
To subscribe to additional Announcements threads (topics), select the “edit” icon at the top of the channel, check the threads to be added, and click on Update. You may reorder the position of threads by clicking on the appropriate “up” or “down” arrow icon. When finished click on the “go back” icon to return to the standard portal channel view.
How can I post events or Announcements on the My Cal Poly Portal?
In order to post to the Announcements Channels, the Portal Administrator must grant you permission to post to the My Cal Poly Portal. There are policies and restrictions on the content of Announcements which must be followed. To request access to post Announcements, contact the My Cal Poly administration staff at 756-6733.
What is id1, id87, etc.?
The above are unique identification tags that are placed after every thread title in the Announcements Channel. They simply allow for quick identification of any announcement thread within the channel and can be used to track messages easily.
How do I check my grades?
The Grades channel is available on the Registration and Account Balance tab by default. This channel displays your grades and GPA from the previous quarter. Previous terms (up to eight) may be selected from the pull-down menu. What is the Software Download channel?
The Software Download channel is located on the Technology tab by default, and is used to download installers for popular site-licensed applications commonly used at Cal Poly. The Software Download Channel supports the download of these installers for both on and off-campus users.
What are the Library Channels?
The Library channels are a suite of services provided by the Robert E. Kennedy Library. They access library hours, research databases, the on-line catalogue, checkout status and on-line renewals, and much more. By default, the Library Channels are located on the Library tab of the portal. What is the Cal Poly Poll Channel?
The Cal Poly Poll channel lets you express your vote on current Cal Poly issues and view the results of past polls. By default, the Poly Poll Channel is located on the News and Poll tab of the portal. What is the Personal Info Channel?
The Personal Info channel is a channel that allows the students change preferred email, phone, and address information stored by the university for personal, billing, and diploma purposes. Faculty/staff may only change their Email Delivery Address on the Personal Info channel. Faculty and staff may update their address information on the Employee Self Service channel. By default, the Personal Info Channel is located on the Personal Info tab of the portal. How do I change my personal information?
Your current personal information will be displayed in the Personal Info channel. Students can update any of the listed addresses or the Email Delivery Address by clicking on the “Update” button to the right-hand side of the field to be changed. You will be presented with a screen where you can make the needed changes. Be sure to check the boxes at the bottom of the screen to include any of other addresses you want to be affected by this new change: Local, Permanent, Billing, or Diploma. Then click the “Update” button at the bottom of the screen. Your changes should appear immediately on the main screen.
Staff/Faculty can only update the Email Delivery Address in the Personal Info channel. Staff/Faculty address updates are made in the My Employee Info channel that is also located on the Personal Info tab.
How do I change my Email Delivery Address?
Login to My Cal Poly and go to the Personal Info channel. To update your Email Delivery Address, click the Update button next to your current Email Delivery Address. Update your address and click the “Apply” button.
Can I apply for Scholarships on my.calpoly.edu?
Absolutely! Cal Poly’s online scholarship application is available as a channel in My Cal Poly, but only accessible during the application window. To learn more about Cal Poly scholarships and the dates during which applications are accepted, please visit the Cal Poly Financial Aid website.
What is the Single Click Access (SCA) Channel?
Single Click Access (SCA) allows you to use the Portal to login to other web-based applications with one user name and password. By default, the Single Click Access Channel (SCA) is located on the Main tab of the Portal. How do I check or add money to the balance in my student account?
The Student Account Transactions channel displays your detailed student account balance and financial transactions. Provided there are transactions listed for the current term, you may add money to your account balance by selecting the link "Make payment online". By default, this channel is located on the Registration and Account Balance tab of the portal.
